Dear Colleague,
I hope you are well, I am writing to you today about a very important matter for anesthesiologists around the world - the threat of international restrictions on ketamine access.
If the current push by Chinese government to have ketamine ‘scheduled’ by the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is successful, medical access to ketamine will become severely limited.
As you may know, ketamine is absolutely vital to performing surgery in countries with limited hospital resources. Unlike other anaesthetics, ketamine does not require a reliable electricity supply, oxygen, highly trained staff, or monitoring systems to administer. That makes it the only safe form of anaesthesia in many low and middle income countries.
The WFSA will launch an awareness campaign this week to allow anaesthesiologists to voice their opinions on the subject. We have created a Resource Hub (http://www.wfsahq.org/get-involved-ketamine) where people can find out more information and share their views.
I hoped you could share this email with your members and ask them to participate in:
1) The social media campaign, by printing this banner, take a photograph of themselves and their location, and upload it onto Facebook/Twitter on Tuesday 1st/Wednesday 2nd December with the hashtag #KetamineIsMedicine
2) Visit the Get Involved (http://www.wfsahq.org/get-involved-ketamine) page of our website and sharing their thoughts on ketamine for our map (in Polish or English)
